As Cool as Me

Yesterday kicked my butt.

My sister in law came over and we decided to go on a walk.  A long walk.

It seemed like a great idea at the time.

In retrospect, I probably shouldn't go shortly before nap time.

Keith had become a human bobble-head. I so bad wanted to take a video of it, but wanted to get home even more than that.

Thankfully the weather was perfect.  Not too hot and not too cold.  I even have a nice sunburn/farmer's tan now.

All in all, we ended up walking 12 miles.  It felt great.

So though I wanted to be home getting everything perfect for my man's birthday dinner, I was out walking.  Then again, the kids slept until dinner time, so I had plenty of time to cook.  That worked out well.  Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all!

But all through dinner the phone kept ringing.  I hate answering the phone during dinner.  I should probably stop doing it if I hate it.  But seeing as how we are anxious for our house to sell, every phone call gets me hoping it is my realtor.  Usually it isn't.  It is generally someone in one of the 49 other states calling to see if we called them.  That is what happens when you are cool.  Or when you are a victim of caller ID spoofing.

What?  You have never heard of Caller ID Spoofing?  Well, neither has the law.  In my opinion it is a form of identity theft, and I hope one day very soon it will be outlawed.  Shortly before Faye was born we switched phone companies.  Our company was gouging us, and we didn't want the bill.  But because every single one of my siblings except my little brother (hi Lane!) lives long distance from us, we have to have a good long distance plan.  Enter the wonderful world of technology.  After much research we signed up with a voice over ip company.  I got to pick our number.  With Keith in mind, I chose the easiest one I could find.  It is pretty darn easy.  Most people think I am stuttering when I tell it to them.

And then the calls started coming:

"Hi.  I have received several phone calls from this number.  What do you want?"

"Uh, we didn't call you."

"Yes you did, I have this number on my caller id.  Stop calling me."

"I have been out of the house all day.  There is no way I could have called you."

"Well, I don't want any more calls from this number."

"I can safely promise you I will never call you... as I never have before."

I then called my phone company, and they looked at the call history, and showed I hadn't called that number.  Surprise!  After this happening several times, I got a little annoyed.  Some people were understanding.  Most people were jerks.  I called the phone company again.  I spoke with a manager.  They told me to contact the local authorities as that would be the only way to make it stop.  I did.  They thought I was making the whole thing up.  They had never heard of CID Spoofing before.  After much explanation, they said there was no way for them to track the phone number thieves down.  So now, I answer the phone several times a day and explain to them that I do not in fact want to speak to them, I do not mean to harass them, and to please stop yelling.  Except that the longer this goes on, people are actually getting to be nice.  It kind of restores my faith in strangers.

And so our phone is constantly ringing by strangers.  But I am beginning to agree with the law enforcement and just accept my popularity.  Everyone really does want to speak with us.  Admit it, you are wanting to call me too.  Not that I can blame you.  But if you call during dinner, I wont be answering.

How annoying! I think I'd have to change my number...

And I never answer the phone during dinner unless the caller ID convinces me otherwise. (It has to be a pretty thrilling caller, though!)

=)

What a way to end a beautiful walk. :) Hope it all gets figured out. I love your photos. They remind me of the days when my sons were young and curious. Now they are older and still curious. Have fun. :)

How awful about the phone calls! I agree with you about the dinner thing, though. We often feel like "what if it is important?" and it rarely is. I suppose if it was they would call back or leave a message.

Hope you guys had a lovely dinner!

I think I can honestly say I don't want to be as cool as you! :)

That's crazy with the Caller ID. Do you think it's because you chose an easy phone number?

i'm all about getting out for walks. hate it when brennan falls asleep on them. i always have a moment of panic when i realize he will only be getting a 45 min nap at 11 in the morning. i'd rather have him not take one at all!

I have never heard of that phone thing, how annoying! Hopefully it gets taken care of so you can eat dinner in peace again. :)
