Lifestyle Change


So I have been doing a lot of thinking lately (mainly while we were camping) about my eating habits. No I don't think I am the worst eater ever born, but there is definite room for improvement. I was thinking about all the preservatives and junk that is put into food, and we put it into our bodies, which we should treat as our very own personal temples. All this thinking mainly came because of The Boss. We are feeding him solid foods now, and the variety is constantly expanding. I was thinking about how careful I want to be with him. I just want to feed him good healthy foods, that will give him all the nutrients and energy that a growing boy should have. However, why should he eat the good foods if I am eating junk? I put the can of Pringles to the side disgustedly when I thought this. Remember, I was camping, so I did have a bit of an excuse to eat junk food, but I still felt guilty. At any rate, I began thinking about the hypoglycemic diet. I have unofficially been diagnosed with hypoglycemia by both my brother, and my doctor. The hypoglycemic diet is to eat twice as much veggies, take all bleached or enriched flour out of the diet, and eat more whole grains, and pure protein sources. And above all, stay away from sugars unless they are natural. When I eat following this diet, I feel great and have so much energy and a gazillion times fewer headaches. So, since I have been ignoring my diet, I have been getting lazier and lazier because I don't have any energy. Who can afford to be lazy with a baby? I don't think it is really possible. Also, I have encountered a ton of articles about healthy eating lately,(click here for an example) and decided I am going to start all over and try it again. Wish me luck! I will let you all know how it goes.

I didn't know you were hypoglycemic! Did you know that I am? I have gone off sugar before and felt great! Unfortunately I haven't been able to keep it up since that one 2 month stretch. But I find the best helps for it are eating nuts and seeds. Especially almonds are good for you. If you shop at some of those healthier food stores they usually have an almond butter dispenser. It is kind of expensive but it makes your hot cereal in the morning even better!

Good luck! It's hard at first to cut back on the things that you love, but after a few weeks it's not too bad :) If you ever need encouragement, just post it on your blog!

My friend recommended a book to me called "In Defense of Food" -- it sounds really good and talks about eating "real" foods and staying away from processed foods that are loaded with chemicals and preservatives. I haven't read it yet...I'm on hold at the library. Anyway, it might be one you'd be interested in. :)
